American Wilderness Leadership School (AWLS)
Nestled in the beautiful Bridger-Teton National Forest, AWLS provides the perfect atmosphere for educational programs. Established in 1976 with the vision of providing educators with a useful hands-on experience that they can bring home to their classrooms, AWLS has provided an accredited wildlife management program for 5,473 teachers who reach more than a million students annually, and a challenging experience for 1,338 students.
If you are a teacher or high school student (juniors and seniors only please) and would like to travel to AWLS to participate in one of their amazing teacher or student education programs it may be possible for our chapter to sponsor you by covering the cost of tuition.
TN Valley SCI sponsors teachers and youths to travel to AWLS annuallyEach year our chapter sponsors at least one teacher and youth to travel to AWLS. In 2014 we sent teacher Dustin Walker of Boyd Buchanan School to AWLS. Below are his comments about the experience:
"Wow! What a trip! Eye opening in so many ways. First of all, as you know the scenery is second to none. I was blown away by the beauty of the wildflowers and the mysteriousness of the mountains. The first hour I was on the property I saw a moose and her two calves and about 4 mule deer. Secondly, the curriculum was great and very well presented by a impressive staff. I can't tell you how many words I wrote down that I had to go look up because I wasn't sure what they exactly meant. The lectures challenged me and peaked my interest into things that I previously found uninteresting. I now am excited about knowing the various plants and animals in my region and learning more about our state parks. I am also excited about sharing everything with our ecology teacher and my 200 plus students. I think they will find it very fascinating. It was truly an opportunity of a lifetime and can not say thank you enough to the people that made it possible. Please send my regards to whomever I may be forgetting. Thanks for everything you all have done and please let me know what I can do to support SCI in the future. I hope all of you have a great weekend.

Local Youth Travels to AWLS
Tennessee Valley Sci Members Help at AWLS work days
(May 2014) TN Valley SCI members Bill and Vicki Swan and Keith and Kathy Watson and their sons, traveled to near Jackson Hole Wyoming to work in the SCI Education Foundation's American Wilderness Leadership School. Nestled in the beautiful Bridger-Teton National Forest, AWLS provides the perfect atmosphere for educational programs. Each year before the summer training sessions begin, there is a need for Safari club members to assist in clean up and spruce up activities. Additionally more construction projects that make the facility better are continuing to be done. TN Valley SCI along with the Alabama Chapter of SCI purchased and installed stalls in the showers of both the men's and women's dormitories.
